Chicken is a bird species in Red Dead Redemption 2 that includes domestic chickens based on Gallus gallus domesticus and the greater prairie chicken, Tympanuchus cupido. The domestic forms are Dominique, Java and Leghorn chickens. They are broad-bodied birds with white or brown plumage, short tails and wide wings, with the red comb around the face and head marking the domestic varieties.
Domestic chickens appear around settlements, especially where towns and cities are established. They walk away when Arthur approaches. Greater prairie chickens live across the Heartlands. Their striped plumage, large ear-like feathers and orange patches at the sides of the head distinguish them from the domestic birds. They take flight while calling out if disturbed.
Chickens forage by pecking and scratching at the ground for seeds, insects, lizards, small snakes and young mice. A killed bird can provide Chicken Feathers, Plump Bird Meat and a Chicken Carcass. Greater prairie chickens can also yield Flight Feathers. The greater prairie chicken counts towards Skin Deep, unlike the domestic birds.
