Player notes
Sheep are domesticated Merino Sheep, Ovis aries, kept at ranches throughout Red Dead Redemption 2. They are passive, docile ranch animals rather than wild game. Their coats appear in white, grey and black with white wool, while a multicoloured sheep with a bow is a special variant. Valentine is known as a sheep-auctioning town, and its sheep pens hold large numbers of Merino Sheep.
Merino Sheep are found around Valentine and Emerald Ranch in New Hanover, as well as Beecher's Hope in West Elizabeth. Early in the game, a shepherd may herd them with a dog near the gang's camp at Horseshoe Overlook. Shepherds with flocks also appear outside various settlements. Their domestic nature means that killing one causes an honor loss, and slaughtering sheep in ranches or towns can make nearby ranchers and civilians hostile. Witnesses may report the act to lawmen as Animal Cruelty.
A sheep provides Sheep Hide, Gristly Mutton and a Sheep Carcass. Skinning one yields hide and Gristly Mutton. Perfect Sheep Hide can be sold to the Trapper for clothing pieces including the Legendary Elk Half Chaps, Trapper's Cloak, Huntsman Vest and Sheepskin Vest. Sheep are therefore used as a source of ranch animal materials, though taking them from settled ranches risks drawing attention from local people and lawmen.

- โMerino Sheep never spawn in one-star quality.
- โA unique Merino Sheep with a pink ribbon can be encountered at Heartland Overflow. The sheep can be seen traveling alone, and killing the sheep will result in a loss of honor. The player cannot skin the sheep, but they can loot a golden wedding ring from the sheep.
- โA near identical sheep may be found dead in a shed with yet another wedding ring at the nearby Guthrie Farm, next to a half-naked human corpse.
- โThe ribbon worn by the dead sheep at Guthrie Farm was originally baby blue instead of pink, and had its own model featuring the golden ring on it; whereas, in the final game, the ring is simply laying on the ground out of view. The player had unique animations for taking it off, and the corpse was originally in a fetal position facing away from the sheep.
- โThe original baby blue color was arguably more accurate to the time period, as the color was often associated with femininity, while pink was seen as a more masculine color. However, it was likely changed to avoid possible confusion.
