Snakes in Red Dead Redemption 2 cover several species, including black-tailed rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, diamondbacks, Fer-de-Lance snakes, water snakes, copperheads, boas and timber rattlesnakes. They are based on species such as Crotalus molossus, Agkistrodon piscivorus, Crotalus atrox, Bothrops asper and Boa constrictor. Most are venomous. When disturbed, a snake may bite Arthur, while horses are always frightened by them. A Health Cure removes snake venom.
They occur across virtually the entire world, including Guarma, though eastern areas hold the greatest concentrations. Bluewater Marsh and Bayou Nwa are particularly populated. The Fer-de-Lance also appears on the main map around Stillwater Creek, southwest of Thieves Landing, including land east of the pool where the Legendary Redfin Pickerel is found. Snakes usually try to escape when Arthur approaches, but can attack if provoked.
A killed snake yields Stringy Meat, Snake Skin and a Snake Carcass. Perfect snake skins come from taking the animal with a bow and Small Game Arrows. Perfect skins of any snake species can be used by the Trapper to make the Rattlesnake Vaquero Saddle. Several species, including the black-tailed rattlesnake, cottonmouth, diamondback, water snakes, copperheads and timber rattlesnake, count towards Skin Deep and Zoologist.
Trivia
- ◆During one of The Mysterious Maya's acts, she is seen with a unique 10-Foot Red Boa that cannot be found anywhere else in the game. It is impossible to study or skin the boa and as such the snake does not count towards the compendium.
- ◆Coral snakes, despite appearing on a cigarette card, were cut from the final game. Also cut from the game are a red snake and a giant snake, the latter of which is smaller than the dead giant snake, but appears alive.
