The Squirrel represents three subspecies in Red Dead Redemption 2: the American red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus; the black squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis; and the Western gray squirrel, Sciurus griseus. It is a small game animal, placing it among the wildlife hunted with small game arrows. Its pelt, tail, stringy meat and carcass can be collected after it is killed.
Squirrels occur throughout virtually the whole world and are among its most common animals, alongside rabbits. They are less numerous in Grizzlies West, Cholla Springs, Great Plains and Bayou Nwa, but can still be encountered across the map. Their broad distribution makes them a frequent small-game sight compared with many other animals in their class.
The game uses squirrels as a source of Squirrel Pelt, Squirrel Tail, Stringy Meat and Squirrel Carcass. A Bow with small game arrows is used to take one cleanly. Squirrels also count among the eight small game animals that can be killed consecutively for Rank 7 of the Survivalist Challenges. Six squirrels are required by the Trapper to make the Squirrel Flat Cap.
