Player notes

Arthur finds Javier Escuella and Charles Smith at Smithfield's Saloon in Valentine, talking with two women. Arthur's blunt manner sends the women away, and the three men settle at the bar to wait for Bill Williamson. Bill soon enters the saloon, collides with a patron and responds by headbutting him. The insult quickly brings the rest of the room into a fight.

Arthur trades blows with the saloon's patrons while Javier, Charles and Bill are drawn into separate struggles. After putting down one brawler, Arthur moves between his companions to help them handle their attackers. Tommy, the largest man in the saloon, then comes downstairs and attacks Javier. Another man grabs Arthur, but Arthur breaks free and reaches Javier as the brawl spills out into the street.

Outside, Arthur faces Tommy alone. Tommy initially overwhelms him, but Arthur recovers and pounds him into the dirt before repeatedly smashing his head against the ground. Thomas Downes pushes through the crowd and pleads for Tommy's life, and Arthur lets him go. Dutch van der Linde arrives with Josiah Trelawny, who has found the gang after searching for them in Blackwater and brings word that bounty hunters are holding Sean MacGuire. Charles and Javier leave to investigate, while Arthur is told to clean himself up before meeting them near Blackwater.

Trivia

  • โ—†Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin is heard in the bar in the background.
  • โ—†Despite being prostitutes, Anastasia and her friend can no longer be seen in Valentine after this mission.
  • โ—†If the player, for some reason, decides to go through the saloon's left-side window to start this mission, Charles' AI will become bugged, and he will become aggressive. He will start randomly attacking, and shooting NPCs, and while the mission won't fail, the player will be unable to continue with it due to his actions breaking the rest of its script.
  • โ—†It is possible to hit the people in the crowd when fighting Tommy outside, though this has no effect on the mission.
  • โ—†When the fight breaks out in the saloon, Charles can be seen throwing a chair. This is actually Benjamin Byron Davis (Dutch's voice actor) doing the motion capture for this. However, it is unknown why he took over for this particular scene.
  • โ—†Furthermore, Charles visibly tries desperately to hold onto Anastasia's friend as she and her try to leave. Players will note that this is very out-of-character for him as in addition to being a complete deviation from his usual stoic and introverted behavior, he never expresses any sexual or romantic interest throughout the rest of the game with the single exception of mentioning wanting to start a family in Canada in the Epilogue. However, the reason this happened is again because the person who usually did his motion capture was not the one doing it at the time; the one doing it was actually Bill's voice actor, Steve J. Palmer. The reason this occurred is also unknown.
  • โ—†Depending on whether this mission has been completed, there will be different dialogue during the interaction in Valentine with Thomas Downes.
  • โ—†Players can use the saloon to get a haircut before the mission by making the mission unavailable.
  • โ—†After completing the mission, a Blond Chestnut Belgian Draft will be hitched outside the construction site next to the general store, which can be taken. This can be useful for returning to camp if the player started "Polite Society, Valentine Style" immediately before and did not bring their main horse with them and chose to return the horse used to pursue Jimmy Brooks to its owner.
  • โ—†One of the girls Javier talks to and whom Arthur rudely scares off appears in one of the end credits scenes. She is shown interacting with Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham, who are likely asking her about the whereabouts of Micah Bell's killer.
