Player notes
John Marston finds Sadie Adler in the Blackwater Saloon and asks whether she has work for him. Sadie explains that James Langton, a rival bounty hunter, took Shane Finley from her before she could deliver him. She intends to take Finley back, and John agrees to ride with her. On the way south through Hennigan's Stead, John offers Sadie a place at Beecher's Hope. They also speak of Dutch van der Linde, but neither has heard from him.
Sadie leads John into Pike's Basin, where they watch Langton's party from the rim. After following the group down into the basin, Sadie and John close in on Finley and his captors. Their approach can begin quietly or openly, but Langton's men fight back. John and Sadie kill Langton and his gang, then take the captive Finley from the camp and load him onto Sadie's horse.
Langton's surviving men attack as Sadie and John ride out of Pike's Basin with Finley. The pair fight off the pursuers and return to Blackwater. At the Blackwater Police Department, Sadie tells Police Chief Oswald Dunbar that Langton tried to rob her and died in the attempt. Finley is handed over, and Sadie shares the bounty payment with John.
Trivia
- โDespite the entire map of New Austin being accessible during the Epilogue chapters, this is the only story mission to take place within it. Canonically, John is not meant to be too familiar with the state before the events of Red Dead Redemption.
- โFurther reinforcing the idea that John Marston is canonically unfamiliar with the area, is Sadie's avoidance of mentioning the state by name, only referring to New Austin as "the desert down south." Additionally, when John asks where they're heading before departing the dinner, Sadie never directly answers his question throughout the entire ride. This would make John even more ignorant of where they are by the time they get there.
- โHowever, in the mission "A Quick Favor for an Old Friend" when Sadie mentions Ramรณn Cortez, she says that an encounter with the Del Lobo Gang, the group Cortez belongs to, in New Austin, a place they had visited before, is inevitable. This dialogue suggests that John has little knowledge of New Austin.
- โShane Finley can also be brought in dead; Police Chief Oswald Dunbar will express his disappointment that he wonโt see Finley hang, and seems to pay only $300, as the player receives only $150.
- โEven if John hasn't done any bounties prior to this mission, he will still tell Sadie that he has done some bounty work of his own. It is possible that he did so in the eight-year gap between Chapter 6 and the Epilogue.
- โThis mission foreshadows the mission "Justice in Pike's Basin" from the original game, which has a similar setup of John scaling down Pike's Basin while gunning down multiple enemies.
