Player notes
At Colter, Abigail Roberts tells Arthur Morgan that John Marston has been missing since he left to scout two days earlier. Arthur doubts that John needs rescuing, but Hosea asks him to search anyway. Javier Escuella volunteers to accompany him, believing John would do the same for him. Javier gives Arthur a Sawed-Off Shotgun, and the two men ride out through the snow along the stream John had followed.
Arthur suggests that John may have abandoned the gang and ridden north, but Javier refuses to believe it. They find a recently deserted camp, then follow tracks through the river and up into the mountains. On the way, Arthur asks about the Blackwater ferry job. Javier recounts the Pinkertons' arrival, Dutch killing a woman, and the gang members who were shot or separated during the escape.
Higher up, they discover John's horse dead in the snow, torn apart by wolves. Javier fires into the air and hears John calling from farther along the mountain path. They leave their horses where the trail narrows and continue on foot. At the end of the route, they find John badly injured, freezing and exhausted. Javier carries him back toward the horses while Arthur tells John he had warned Dutch that scouting was beyond him.
Wolves return when they reach the horses. Javier takes John to his mount while Arthur holds the animals off, then kills another pack as the three ride down the mountain. Back at Colter, Bill Williamson and Lenny Summers take John inside, where Abigail scolds him. Hosea thanks Arthur and Javier and says the gang will head east after the storm breaks. Arthur later records his thoughts in his journal.

Trivia
- ◆Before heading out to look for John, Javier says that "I know if the situation were reversed... he'd look for me." This could be seen as a foreshadowing of John's long hunt for Javier years later.
- ◆While riding out to look for John, Arthur bitterly comments how the latter possibly abandoned the gang, saying he “kept riding north and never looked back." At the end of the game, Arthur advises John to “keep riding and don’t look back" while trying to urge him to escape from Dutch and the deteriorating gang with Abigail and Jack.
- ◆Before heading out to look for John, Arthur, while conversing with Abigail, will mockingly call him "little John." Famously, Little John is one of the companions of Robin Hood, whose actions of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor inspired the Van der Linde gang's own operations, at least before they fully dedicated themselves to ensuring their own survival and enforcing Dutch’s worldview.
- ◆After Arthur picks up John, a small snippet of the main theme of Red Dead Redemption can be heard in the background.
- ◆After completing this mission, players now can walk around in the camp, though they still cannot stray too far.
- ◆While scaling the mountain, Arthur's stamina core will deplete, prompting the player to access the satchel. If one refrains from using provisions, a quick scene will play where Javier gives Arthur a swig of Kentucky bourbon.
- ◆The top of the mountains where this mission takes place is accessible for only this mission. After the mission is completed, an avalanche covers much of the mountainside north of the ravine - making it impossible for the player to continue north either by horse or on foot; so the only way to access the mountains is through glitches.
- ◆Arthur and Javier briefly leave the map boundaries on their way to find John, entering what would presumably be the Northern Grizzlies, an area mentioned only in Arthur's journal.
- ◆The title is a reference to Shakespeare's 1623 play The Winter's Tale, which famously includes the stage direction "Exit, pursued by a bear" for the character Antigonus. The same reference is used for the mission "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego" - in this case with the character actually being chased by a large bear.
- ◆Since John has been attacked by wolves, besides the scars he will have a ruined jacket and trousers. In the Epilogue, you can notice that he has repaired them.
- ◆It is possible to kill some of the wolves by trampling them with your horse. This will allow you to save shotgun ammo and will count towards no damage objective.
- ◆If the player insists on taking the revolver, Javier will make a comment about it.
- ◆If the player doesn't protect Javier and John from the wolves, a unique death scene will appear.
