About this weapon

The Cannon is a stationary smoothbore artillery weapon that fires ammunition with a propellant charge, most commonly a cannonball. Red Dead Redemption 2 uses several forms of cannon: the Hotchkiss Cannon, Hotchkiss Mountain Gun and the naval guns mounted on the Guarma Warship. The Model 1841 6-Pdr Smoothbore Field Gun also appears, though only as scenery at Bolger Glade, Sisika Penitentiary and Riley's Charge.

During Chapter 5's "Hell Hath No Fury", Arthur Morgan operates a Hotchkiss Cannon at Cinco Torres to sink a warship. That vessel returns fire with a unique cannon variant found nowhere else in the game. In "Paradise Mercifully Departed", Arthur destroys several Hotchkiss Mountain Guns, then uses one against Alberto Fussar.

Hotchkiss Mountain Guns also appear in "The King's Son", where one blasts an opening through the wall of Fort Wallace. In "Favored Sons", a cannon is directed at Arthur, but he can seize it during the battle. These guns are used as fixed artillery during mission combat, while the Model 1841 field guns remain unusable props in the world.

Trivia

  • โ—†Cannonballs disappear once they reach a certain distance from a player, any player in Multiplayer. The maximum range for a cannon shot is unknown, but one gunner and one "observer" cooperating managed to shoot a ball from El Presidio to past Casa Madrugada.
  • โ—†At the time of Red Dead Redemption, conventional cannons had been obsoleted by more modern rifled cannons, howitzers, and mortars. Smoothbore cannons still found use, but were increasingly uncommon and no longer in production.
  • โ—†The cannon in Red Dead Redemption appears to be based on the 7 inch and 8 inch breech loading Armstrong Guns of the 1850s and 1860s.
  • โ—†Sometimes, when shooting a cannon inside El Presidio, NPC's will aim their weapons or actually fire on the player. This is most likely because they feel threatened by the continued use of the cannon, or some splash damage could have injured an NPC inside.
  • โ—†The Hotchkiss Cannon has a logo indicating it was created by Hutton & Baird in-universe.
