About this weapon

The Springfield Rifle, officially called the Lancaster Springfield, is a single-shot breech-loading rifle. Its classic design draws on the breech-loading rifles associated with Westerns, while its military use informs its role as a powerful weapon for medium and long-range fighting. It holds one round at a time and carries up to 100 rounds of Rifle Ammo.

It delivers high damage with strong range and accuracy, making it suited to large mammals as well as distant targets. Its single-shot action is slow to fire and reload, however, so it is less effective when enemies close in. The rifle accepts Regular, High Velocity, Split Point, Express and Explosive rifle ammo.

After "Eastward Bound", the Springfield Rifle is sold by all gunsmiths for $120. It is also obtained free during "Sodom? Back to Gomorrah". In Red Dead Online, it becomes available at Rank 38 through the Handheld Catalog, and can then be collected from a horse, a Post Office or Camp.

Trivia

◆The Springfield Rifle is based on the Springfield Model 1888 “Trapdoor” rifle, as evidenced by its ramrod bayonet. It appears to be shortened somewhat compared to the real full size rifle.
◆Unlike the Red Dead Redemption version, which was a four-shot rifle which reloaded similar to a Repeater, this version is modeled accurately, the rifle is a single-shot breechloader and the reload animation involves the protagonist pulling back the hammer to half-cock, opening the "trapdoor", putting a round into the breech, closing the "trapdoor" and finally pulling the hammer all the way back.
◆According to the Weapon Catalogue's description, the rifle was created as a conversion of old muzzle-loading rifles used during the American Civil War. This parallels the history of the real life "Trapdoor Springfield", which were originally created as breechloading conversions of the Springfield Model 1861 and Model 1863 muzzle-loading rifles.
◆With a scope attached, the rifle can be a strong alternative for the Rolling Block Rifle, although the Rolling Block is strictly better than the Springfield, making this the only weapon in the game that has strictly worse stats than another non-unique weapon.
◆The single benefit of a scoped Springfield Rifle over the Rolling Block is the ability to switch from scope aim to iron-sights, which the Rolling Block cannot do in normal gameplay. This makes it more effective when quickly switching to aim at closer targets or when aiming whilst moving on horseback.
◆The changes made to the weapon between games gives it a very similar performance to the Buffalo Rifle, especially when loaded with express ammo.
◆Due to being a single-shot weapon, this rifle is ideal for hunting large game, especially if the player is still at Dead Eye level 1 (Auto-targeting).
