Player notes

Michael De Santa waits at Trevor Philips's trailer in Sandy Shores when Ron Jakowski arrives looking for Trevor. Ron mentions a regular Merryweather train, and Trevor soon returns with Patricia Madrazo. Trevor explains that the train is carrying a valuable shipment, enough to settle matters with Martin Madrazo, and recruits Michael for the robbery. He sends Michael to Raton Canyon Bridge in a Dinghy while he heads east of Sandy Shores on a Sanchez.

Trevor rides beside the freight train, uses the raised ground beside the tracks to leap onto its cars, and crosses the roofs to the locomotive. He incapacitates the driver and takes control, carrying the train past the Merryweather presence at Paleto Bay. The view shifts to Michael, travelling up from the Alamo Sea toward the bridge. Trevor sends the stolen train into an oncoming locomotive at Raton Canyon Bridge, then jumps clear as wreckage and cargo containers plunge into the water.

Michael reaches the orange container and uses sticky bombs to force open its doors. Trevor comes ashore and holds off Merryweather boats, helicopters and gunmen while Michael loads the shipment into the Dinghy. Trevor joins him, and they escape down the rapids toward the river's mouth under further pursuit. At a beach near North Chumash, they inspect the case and find an ancient artifact. Trevor wants it, but Michael intends to give it to Martin Madrazo. Michael promises to help rob the Union Depository with Lester Crest and Franklin Clinton, persuades Trevor to agree, takes the artifact and leaves the getaway vehicles.

Trivia

  • โ—†The collision of the two trains on the bridge is taken from an identical scene in the 1995 movie Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, which ends with two trains colliding on a bridge, exploding and falling into the river below.
  • โ—†When Trevor and Patricia return to the trailer, Michael makes a sarcastic remark about Stockholm syndrome, claiming it is "very nice this time of year". Stockholm syndrome is a psychological phenomenon whereby hostages express sympathy or empathy towards their captors, as highlighted by Trevor's and Patricia's mutual affection for each other. Ned Luke has also stated that this was one of his favorite lines to do as Michael in GTA V.
  • โ—†The optional task "Better than CJ" is a reference to the mission Wrong Side of the Tracks in GTA San Andreas, which has CJ riding a dirtbike and chasing after a train in a similar manner to Trevor. It is also a reference to the popular line said by Big Smoke, "All we had to do, was follow the damn train, CJ!", if the notoriously difficult mission is failed by losing the train, or if the train reaches the Frederick Bridge with any Vagos members still alive.
  • โ—†This mission is similar to For the Man Who Has Everything in The Ballad of Gay Tony for two reasons:

  • โ—†They both have a second character helping them: in the mission mentioned above, Yusuf Amir helps Luis. In Derailed, Michael De Santa helps Trevor.

  • โ—†Despite being a mission for Ron and Trevor, it can only be triggered as Michael.
  • โ—†This is one of the few missions where a time lapse always plays in the opening cutscene, even in replay mode.
  • โ—†The dirt path that is featured in this mission can allow police vehicles to spawn on it, as the game considers it as a road due to the waypoint going there.
  • โ—†During this mission, the train driver sits on the right-hand side of the cab. In regular gameplay, all drivers sit on the left-hand side.
  • โ—†This is the only time in the game that the player can control a train, and also the only time that a train is carrying more than ten container cars.
  • โ—†The train in this mission is 40 cars long (four times the regular amount).
  • โ—†When Trevor takes command of the train, the player will automatically be shifted into cockpit view, making this mission one of the few ways to examine a vehicle's interior in detail in the original version. Pressing the horn button will sound the train's whistle as well.
  • โ—†The same will happen if first-person view is activated in the enhanced version.
  • โ—†The "inlet" that Michael refers to is actually an outlet, as water flows out of the Alamo Sea, not into it.
  • โ—†This is one of three missions where the player can use the thermal scope, the others being the freighter approach of The Merryweather Heist and Predator.
  • โ—†When the third helicopter shows up while protecting Michael, it's impossible to shoot it down with a heat-seeking rocket launcher. The missiles do lock on, but the helicopter evades them.
  • โ—†When Trevor is riding on the back of the Dinghy, he will use a Combat MG, even if the player does not have one.
