About this vehicle
The Karin Futo is a two-door sport compact coupe in Grand Theft Auto V, with room for two occupants. It is listed at $9,000. Its GTA V model retains the small coupรฉ shape used in GTA IV, and some examples appear with a black lip spoiler on the trunk. The upper body and steering-wheel stitching take the primary colour, while the lower body uses the secondary colour.
The car is chiefly modelled on the Toyota Corolla Levin AE86. Its front-end details, body shape and paint treatment also draw from other Japanese cars, while the bumpers and parts of the rear lighting mix further influences with Levin GT-style lamps. The dashboard closely follows the AE86's layout, and its steering wheel resembles a MOMO MOD. 07. Its stock Fujiwara wheels resemble RS Watanabe F8 rims.
In GTA Online, the Futo supports liveries and further visual customisation. After Hours removes its original lower-side decals and hood emblem from the standard body so they do not clash with liveries. Those markings remain available as the Classic Decals livery. Other liveries include Karin Rally Team, Legendary Racer, Team Auto Exotic, Rolling Dude No.7 and Garage Drift, giving the Futo racing and drift-oriented appearances.
Trivia
- โFuto (ใตใจ) literally translates to "inadvertently" in Japanese.
- โThe name "Futo" is derived from the Japanese pronunciation for the word drift, "dorifuto" (ใใชใใ), probably referring the car's real-life counterpart as a popular drifting car. This is further referenced in the "Drift Missile" livery for its GTX variant in GTA Online, where the white "DORI-" word is scribbled on the left of the "Futo" badge, making it say "Dori-Futo".
- โ"Futo" is also an anagram of tofu, possibly referencing the featured in the Initial D series, where the Toyota AE86 was used both for drifting and tofu delivery by the protagonist, . This is referenced in the "Delivery Boy" livery for its GTX variant, which is based on the livery from the aforesaid AE86, and the "Futo" badge will change to say "Tofu" instead if applied.
- โInterestingly, "Fujiwara", the surname of the protagonist from the Initial D series, is also the name of the custom tuner rims found in mod shops, which are identical to the Futo's stock wheels.
- โThe 20-valve, 4-cylinder engine with 4-throttle bodies is a clear reference to the 16v-to-20v 4A-GE swap which is commonly swap into the Toyota AE86 from the Japanese-market only AE101 (Silvertop) and AE111 (Blacktop).
- โThe Futo can be modded at Los Santos Customs to resemble the GT variant from GTA IV. However, the only different variants that the player can find on the streets are versions with and without the small lip spoiler on the rear.
- โIf the "Custom Skirts" option is applied to the car, the "INLINE 20v" marking will appear on the rear portion.
- โThe presence of the number "86" on the "Karin Rally Team" livery is a clear reference to the real life counterpart, the Toyota AE86 Corolla.
