The Sniper Rifle is a Shrewsbury bolt-action weapon in the Sniper rifles class. In Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, its design is based on the Accuracy International Arctic Warfare, particularly the folding-stock AW-F variant. It has Picatinny rails along its top and side, and carries ten rounds. Its listed damage and range are high, while its fire rate is low.
Trevor receives a Sniper Rifle free during one of his earlier missions. Another free rifle lies beside one of the telescopes at Galileo Observatory. The weapon can take a Suppressor and an improved Scope, with its magnification determined by the scope fitted. Black Tint, Army Tint and LSPD Tint are also available.
The rifle is built for distant shots and can be used quietly at range with the Suppressor attached. It remains bolt-action, so its firing pace and reload speed leave it less suited to rapid exchanges than faster rifles. Body shots inflict severe damage but armored opponents can withstand them more effectively, and cars require many rounds. A correctly placed shot can pass through closely aligned targets and eliminate more than one at once.
Trivia
- โFrom GTA San Andreas up to the latest games, shooting the birds flying in the air causes them to disappear, with the exception of GTA V and GTA Online, where shooting a bird will kill it.
- โA possible overlook, when the Poor Weapons cheat in GTA IV is used, instead of receiving this rifle, the player instead gets the Combat Sniper. This makes the Sniper Rifle the only weapon that cannot be acquired by cheats.
- โIn GTA IV and its episodes, the sniper rifle's bolt is on the right, but the player character will pull an invisible bolt on the left.
- โThe sound of the Sniper Rifle firing in GTA Chinatown Wars is recycled from that of the shotgun sound from the 3D Universe games (except for GTA San Andreas).
- โThe Sniper Rifle in GTA V and GTA Online holds 10 rounds in its magazine, however the magazine juts out significantly further from the weapon than its real-life inspiration, and should be able to hold closer to 20 rounds.
- โIn GTA V and GTA Online, after firing the last round of a magazine in first person, the character will unnecessarily pull the bolt and push it back into its position, as if there is still a round left, before initiating the reload sequence.
