The Black Bear is an American black bear, Ursus americanus, in Red Dead Redemption 2. It is an omnivore that feeds on salmon, honey, fruit, small mammals and carrion. Its coat has a soft, dense underfur beneath long, thick guard hairs, though it is less shaggy and coarse than a Grizzly Bear's fur.
Black Bears occur in Big Valley, around Aurora Basin, in Bayou Nwa and across the forested parts of Roanoke Ridge. They are smaller than Grizzly Bears. Although the game marks them as hostile on the mini-map and their presence can spook a horse, they are passive animals that normally run away rather than attack.
Hunting a Black Bear provides Black Bear Fur, Animal Fat, a Black Bear Claw and Big Game Meat. The meat can be cooked, while the claws and fat are used in crafting. A Perfect Black Bear pelt allows the Trapper to make the Bear Fringed Shotgun Chaps and Bear Grenadier Hat. Skinning black or grizzly bears also counts towards Rank 5 of the Master Hunter Challenges.
