Player notes
The Cat is an American Domestic Cat, Felis catus, in Red Dead Redemption 2. Its appearance is based on a brown mackerel tabby domestic cat. Every cat has a short coat, though the game presents stocky, moderate and slim body variants. They are small domestic animals rather than a distinct wild cat species.
Cats live around settlements and the homesteads nearby. Strawberry has the largest concentration, while other sightings occur in Saint Denis, Valentine, Emerald Ranch, Rhodes, Blackwater Cemetery and Thieves' Landing. Their presence around these inhabited places keeps them close to houses, yards and other parts of town where domestic animals would be expected.
The different body builds give cats some visual variety within the species, from stocky animals to slimmer ones. They can be seen hunting rats and small songbirds. At other times, a cat carries one of these catches around in its mouth.

- โThe stocky variant looks like the European wildcat (Felis silvestris), especially with the thicker shape to their tail.
- โSimilarly, the moderate, slim, and thin variants look like the African wildcat (Felis lybica), the species that the domestic cat was bred from.
- โAlthough the player is able to Praise and Scold cats similar to Dogs, the player is unable to pet cats. This has been lamented by many players and game reviewers alike.
- โWhen the player greets a cat, the cat will stop in their path (if walking), turn and look at the player, meow several times and might even begin purring. If the player scolds a cat, it will run away.
