Cougar (RDR 2)

The Cougar is a cougar, Puma concolor, also known as a puma or mountain lion. It is a large North American cat with a slender, tan body, a low profile and a coat that conceals it in brush and dry ground. It cannot roar, but purrs like a domestic cat. A solitary carnivore, it hunts deer, elk, moose and mountain goats.

Cougars range across New Austin, West Elizabeth and remote forested parts of New Hanover. They are common in southwestern New Austin, including Cholla Springs, Gaptooth Ridge and Rio Bravo, and also appear in Big Valley, Roanoke Ridge, Tall Trees and the Great Plains. They can be encountered around Black Bone Forest, north of Owanjila, near Beaver Hollow and along the coast between Annesburg and Van Horn Trading Post.

The cougar sits at the top of the food chain and has no natural enemies, though it competes with bears and wolves for food. Its speed, silent movement and ambushes make it a dangerous predator. Killing and skinning one yields Cougar Fur, Big Game Meat and a Cougar Carcass. Its fangs are used in crafting, its meat can be eaten, and cougar pelts are used for Trapper clothing, the Cougar McClelland Saddle and the Legend of the East Satchel.
