The Deer is the White-tailed Deer, Odocoileus virginianus, a large brown mammal with long, slender legs and a short tail. It is based on the real white-tailed deer. Deer live across New Hanover, West Elizabeth, Lemoyne and Ambarino, and occur almost everywhere in the world outside New Austin. They are especially common in the eastern states and inhabit a range of environments, including the forests of New Hanover, Lemoyne and West Elizabeth.
Deer are nervous animals that startle easily and flee at high speed, though they are comparatively easy to bring down once hit. A headshot with an arrow can kill one. Their herbivorous diet consists of grasses, nuts, fungi, twigs and fruit. Long-range weapons, including rifles and a Bow using Poison Arrows, suit their wary behaviour.
A killed deer yields Deer Hide, Mature Venison and a Deer Carcass. The hide is used in crafting, while venison can be cooked and provides food for the camp. Hides and meat can also be sold to a butcher. Skinning three deer fulfils Rank 1 of the Master Hunter Challenges.
