Player notes
The Hawk is a medium-sized bird of prey represented by the Ferruginous Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk and Rough-legged Hawk. These birds have yellow hooked beaks, large eyes, broad wings and long, pointed tails with dense brown plumage. Their wide wings allow them to cover long distances in flight. They feed on smaller animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles and carrion, with the exact diet varying between the three species.
Hawks occur throughout the states, in open country, beside cliffs, fields and deserts. Ferruginous Hawks range across the states, while Red-tailed Hawks inhabit the open fields and deserts of New Austin, West Elizabeth and New Hanover. Rough-legged Hawks favour open ground and cliffside areas. Hawks are especially common around Armadillo in New Austin, and can also appear in Guarma.
The Varmint Rifle is suited to hunting hawks and other birds of this size, and provides a clean kill. A hawk yields Hawk Feather, Flight Feather, Gamey Bird Meat and a Hawk Carcass. Its feathers are used in crafting. Killing a hawk while it feeds on a corpse counts towards Rank 6 of the Survivalist Challenge.
