The Muskrat is the American muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus, a medium-sized semi-aquatic rodent native to North America. It lives in wetlands across varied climates and habitats, feeding as an omnivore on aquatic plants, small fish and amphibians. In Red Dead Redemption 2, it is represented as a waterside animal whose fur, meat and scent glands can be collected after a kill.
Muskrats inhabit most major waterways. They are found along the rivers and shores of New Austin, West Elizabeth, Lemoyne and New Hanover, with Bluewater Marsh holding the greatest concentration. They also appear around Aberdeen Pig Farm. They feed and move about at any hour, though they are more active after dark, making the waterways and marshes their usual territory.
On foot, a character can be bitten by a muskrat. The bite briefly stuns its target before the animal runs away. Hunting one yields Muskrat Fur, Stringy Meat, Scent Glands and a Muskrat Carcass. The fur and scent glands are used in crafting, while the stringy meat is used for cooking.
