Player notes
The Peccary, also called the Collared Peccary or Javelina, is based on Dicotyles tajacu. It is a herbivorous animal native to New Austin, feeding on agave, prickly pear cacti, mesquite beans, fruit, nuts and roots. Its in-game range is confined to the western part of the territory, where it lives among the dry country and desert vegetation.
Peccaries are found in Cholla Springs, Rio Bravo and Gaptooth Ridge. These three regions make up their entire known range in Red Dead Redemption 2, all within western New Austin. They are large game, and their hunting behaviour is assessed alongside other animals of that size rather than the smaller wildlife found across the frontier.
A rifle or a Bow with arrows can bring down a Peccary cleanly. Improved Arrows and Poison Arrows can also be used, while a Repeater may kill one with a single shot but generally does not leave a clean carcass. A killed Peccary yields Peccary Skin, Tender Pork Loin, Animal Fat and a Javelina Tusk. Its carcass can be sold to traders, and its meat can be cooked.
Trivia
- โThe Rattler outfit requires two Perfect Collared Peccary pelts to be complete; therefore, this outfit can only be acquired during the epilogue, as the Peccary can only be found in New Austin.
- โSpecifically in Red Dead Online, this animal will yield an additional material - it's own tusk, which can then either be utilized in the crafting of the Javelina Tusk Trinket or sold.
- โWhile only two colors of Peccary can be found, there is an unused brown variant in the game files.
