Player notes
At Pronghorn Ranch, Abe brings John Marston a telegram from Sadie Adler. She wants him to meet her at the saloon in Valentine, promising good pay. John takes the message to the house to tell Abigail Roberts, but finds neither Abigail nor Jack there. In their place, he finds a letter and a gift. Abigail explains that she has taken Jack away because John keeps finding trouble, whether he causes it himself or steps in for other people, and she cannot keep their son around that danger.
John opens Abigail's gift, a shirt, then Dickens comes into the house. John hides the shirt and letter and claims Abigail has simply gone out. Dickens has seen Abigail and Jack leave with their luggage, however, and suspects that John's shooting near Strawberry has driven them away. When Dickens asks who John really is, John calls himself a family man. He puts Abigail's letter away, and Dickens tells him there is still ranch work waiting.
John returns to his duties at Pronghorn Ranch. Time passes as he works around the property, repairing fences, tending cattle, clearing manure and caring for horses. Over the following months, he keeps at the work while considering Abigail's wish for a home of their own at Beecher's Hope. Dickens eventually admits that John has become a fine worker. John asks whether Geddes might offer advice, and Dickens believes Geddes will hear him out.
John goes to Geddes' house, where Geddes' son answers the door before calling his father outside. John and Geddes speak about marriage and their wives. John asks whether a man can change, then asks for help securing a loan to buy the land at Beecher's Hope and show Abigail that he means to live differently. Geddes directs him to his cousin, Ansel Atherton, who can arrange the loan. John returns to pack, changes into his Cowboy Outfit and rides out through Big Valley.

Trivia
- โWhenever going to Geddes' house, the player can optionally greet or antagonize Dickens as he turns into an NPC, and he has his own voice lines.
- โDickens will run away if John antagonizes him three times.
- โTo change clothing, John can now buy clothing from any store, or go to a tailor and access the wardrobe in the back of the shop, which will allow the usual 3 outfits to be chosen and stored on your horse.
- โTo change weapons when you are "in between homes", you can always rent a room.
- โThe scene where John reads the letter explaining why Abigail and Jack left him is very similar to the mission "Did Somebody Say Yoga?" from Grand Theft Auto V, another title by Rockstar, in which the protagonist Michael De Santa reads a letter from his wife explaining why his family left him for reasons very similar to John's.
- โToward the end of the mission, the song that plays in the background in John's long ride to Valentine or Blackwater is an extended version of "Cruel World" by Willie Nelson, a shortened version of which can be found in The Music of Red Dead Redemption 2: Original Soundtrack.
- โThe letter from Abigail does not show up in the player's inventory because in the cutscene, John is seen putting it in the shelf.
