Player notes

Arthur reaches the stolen oil wagon at Old Trail Rise, where Sean MacGuire is passing the time by shooting at bottles and boasting about his speed with a revolver. Arthur joins him in the contest, then Sean presses to be included in John Marston's train robbery. John has not wanted Sean involved, and Arthur doubts he will be useful, but Sean refuses to be left behind. They remain with the wagon until nightfall.

John and Charles Smith arrive after dark, and the four men drive the heavy wagon towards a railroad crossing on the border of Lemoyne and New Hanover. Arthur takes the reins, collects John along the way, and brings the wagon onto the tracks. He unhitches the horses as the others take cover. The approaching train stops before the obstruction, and Charles knocks out its driver. Arthur climbs aboard while the gang moves in.

Arthur and John force their way through the passenger cars, taking valuables from the wealthy travelers without harming them. John sends Arthur ahead to assist Sean with the baggage car. Arthur finds Sean at its door, but a guard strikes Sean down as more guards emerge. Arthur kills the guards, checks that Sean can continue, and clears out the baggage car while Sean recovers from the blow.

Lawmen appear outside the train and demand that the gang surrender. Arthur initially dismisses the small group, then more officers emerge from the trees and open fire. Arthur, John, Charles and Sean fight their way back to their horses and flee across the Heartlands. Once they have shaken the pursuit, they divide the money and separate, intending to return to camp.

Trivia

  • ◆The Cattleman Revolver is a single-action revolver. Sean swings out the revolver when reloading, which would be impossible for the Colt Model 1873 SAA.
  • ◆According to the second trailer, Lenny and Bill were originally intended to be part of the robbery, but were scrapped during the development.
  • ◆Near the end of the mission, John expresses his suspicion of how quickly the lawmen turned up. A newspaper article (see the section "AFTERMATH") states that the law enforcement had been warned of the robbery beforehand. How they had been tipped off is unclear. Arthur will also tell Dutch that law enforcement arrived too quickly in camp. This dialogue is perhaps the first hint of a rat in the gang.
  • ◆It can also be supposed that someone heard Mary-Beth informing Arthur and Uncle of this lead in Valentine.
  • ◆Regardless of whether the player has completed "A Fisher of Men", Arthur will mention that the Pinkertons have found him near Horseshoe Overlook. This is likely an oversight.
  • ◆This mission shares a striking resemblance with the well-known train robbery scene from the 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, specifically the shots of the approaching train, the gang members waiting in the trees, and Arthur standing atop the oil wagon silhouetted by the train's lights.
  • ◆After this mission, players will be able to mark targets manually using Dead Eye.
  • ◆Most likely due to a glitch, it is possible to become unable to loot the baggage car, and thus become unable to get a Gold Medal for the mission if the guards in the car are killed in a way that positions their bodies on top, and/or extremely close to the chests the player is supposed to loot. The guards themselves cannot be picked up, and occasionally, not looted either, likely the result of another glitch.
  • ◆There is also another glitch which causes the train to approach the crossing at a ridiculously high speed, too fast for the player to park the oil wagon over the tracks in time and ultimately failing the mission. The best way to counter this is to literally floor it to the crossing, using the creek bed to save precious little time you have before the train spawns.
  • ◆If the player has a different weapon in the long-arm shoulder slot, it will switch to a Carbine Repeater for the cutscene when the train stops.
  • ◆When escaping the lawmen on horseback, if the player follows the railway northwest and crosses state lines from Lemoyne into New Hannover, the lawmen will not pursue, likely due to them being based in Lemoyne with no jurisdiction in the bordering state. This is also a very easy method of attaining the gold medal objective to escape the lawmen within 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • ◆After the final cutscene, even though Arthur tells the gang to split up, Sean, Charles and John head straight to Horseshoe Overlook together when the mission is done.
  • ◆If the player drives too close to the road sign on the way to the train tracks, John can get hit by it and fall off the wagon. The same can be done to Charles if the player reverses the wagon and lines him up with the sign.
