As the survivors ride from the train robbery, Tilly Jackson returns with Jack Marston and reports that Agent Milton has taken Abigail Roberts to Van Horn. Micah Bell urges Dutch van der Linde to abandon her, and Dutch leads most of the gang back to Beaver Hollow. Arthur Morgan refuses to leave Abigail behind. He gives Tilly money and sends her and Jack to Copperhead Landing, then rides with Sadie Adler toward Van Horn.
Sadie asks the sick Arthur to cover her advance from the lighthouse. He shoots Pinkertons from above as she fights through Van Horn, but Milton's men seize her outside the Fence. Arthur battles his way to the pier and enters the building, where Milton reveals that Micah has informed on the gang since Guarma. Arthur cannot overpower Milton, but Abigail breaks free and kills the agent with Sadie's revolver. Arthur, Sadie and Abigail escape the town under Pinkerton fire.
Arthur sends Sadie and Abigail to Copperhead Landing, where Abigail can rejoin Jack, and takes the key to Dutch's money chest before returning alone to Beaver Hollow. He denounces Micah as the rat before the remaining gang. John Marston then arrives, having survived the train robbery, and tells them Dutch left him behind. Susan Grimshaw backs Arthur and John, but Micah shoots her dead. Agent Ross and the Pinkertons assault the camp, forcing everyone apart as Arthur and John flee through the caves.
Outside Beaver Hollow, Arthur tells John that Abigail and Jack are safe and that Micah betrayed them. Their horses are shot down during the escape. Arthur either returns through the caves for Dutch's money or leads John into Grizzlies East. If he helps John, he gives him his hat and satchel, then holds off Pinkertons before Micah attacks him. If he returns for the money, Micah confronts him in the caves. Dutch eventually leaves Arthur and Micah behind, and Arthur dies on the mountain or in Beaver Hollow.

Trivia
- โIf the player has glitched off the scope of their Carcano Rifle before the quest begins, the rifle will be reequipped with the long scope.
- โIf the locked Fence door is breached with mods and the player enters the store without activating the deadeye sequence, the Pinkertons holding Sadie and Abigail hostage can be shot at but they will be invincible and even immune to explosive despite obtaining visible injuries. Abigail and Sadie will not be affected by any explosions thrown at them either. Sadie will glitch standing but the ropes will remain floating in the air. If the player goes back and re-enters the building by knocking the door off, the two Pinkerton agents will teleport back to their scripted spots but the injuries on their bodies will remain.
- โIt doesn't matter whether the player presses the grapple button or not. Agent Milton will always be shot by Abigail before he has a chance to shoot Arthur.
- โAfter Arthur and John leave the caves at Beaver Hollow, Cleet and Joe appear as enemies on the mini-map, although Dutch and Micah do not. All four can be shot, as well as their horses, though they cannot be locked onto. Their vital spots will also appear in Dead Eye. However, no matter where or how many times they are hit, none can be killed; they're also unaffected by dynamite.
- โArthur's ride back to camp is similar to a moment in the mission "Bury the Hatchet" (assuming the player chose to continue as Michael) from Grand Theft Auto V, another game by Rockstar, as the two scenes involve the protagonist remembering quotes and conversations from their past as they travel to a certain location to confront their enemies.
- โRegardless of what clothes John wore in the previous mission, he will always wear his full outlaw clothing when arriving in Beaver Hollow.
- โBill and Javier are not seen alongside Dutch, Micah, Cleet, and Joe after Arthur and John emerge from the caves after escaping the Pinkertons from Beaver Hollow. It is impossible to see them leaving and they never appear on the minimap as allies, unlike the rest of the gang. Their absence suggests that they chose to flee instead of pursuing Arthur and John alongside the rest.
- โIf Arthur's horse has reached at least level 3 horse bonding, a scene will play after the small shootout when the horses are shot where Arthur runs to his horse and comforts it before its death.
- โWhether Arthur is wearing a hat or not before his last ride, he will always put his default hat on before the ride back to camp. If Arthur has a hat on, even if it's the default, it will automatically be shot off during the escape from Van Horn.
- โDuring this mission, the red patch around Roanoke Ridge and its towns, Bayou Nwa and the surroundings of Saint Denis and Blackwater will be gone, indicating that the Pinkertons knew they were about to find the gang.
- โBefore the Pinkertons ambush the gang, they can be seen from the distance behind the trees.
- โOddly, it is possible to loot Susan's body after the cutscene, collecting a tonic and ammo for a shotgun. Looting Susan is very hard due to Pinkertons continually shooting and will obviously result in a honor loss.
- โDuring the shootout with the Pinkertons at camp, Micah aims the gun at the agents but won't actually shoot at themโclearly a sign of his affiliation with them and betrayal of the gangโwhilst the other gang members do.
- โIf the player goes with John, this is the only mission in which Arthur's voice cracks into falsetto due to his sickness (occurs while Arthur is crawling for Micah's revolver).
- โMicah forgets one of his guns in the High Honor ending (if the player helps John escape), however, he has both in "American Venom". It's possible he returned shortly after.
- โIt's possible to kill Micah in "Return for the money" ending. Arthur will have to dodge and counter Micah's attacks continuously as attacking normally there will be a chance that Arthur will slash Micah's left eye or not (depends on his honor). After killing Micah, the mission will be stuck, preventing the player from continuing.
- โSusanโs body is nowhere to be found where she was shot if the player returns for the money.
- โArthur's Honor also affects his ride back to camp. If Arthur has high honor, the song "That's The Way It Is" will be played in a somber and emotional tone, while the cinematic color screen will flash yellow and Arthur will reflect on good dialogues. If Arthur has low honor, the song will be much darker and much more melancholic than the high honor version. the color screen will also flash gray and Arthur reflects on bad dialogues.
- โArthur's Honor also has a minor impact on his optional dialogue while riding with Sadie to save Abigail from the Pinkertons. If he has high Honor, he will apologize to Sadie for getting her into the gang's mess and blame himself for presumably failing his plan of securing a future for John and his family. If he has low Honor, he tells Sadie how Dutch criticized Arthur years ago for robbing a poor man's house, but now seeing that Dutch has turned into the very thing he despised and that he and Micah only care about getting rich. He will also talk about stealing the gang's hidden money stash, with Sadie reminding Arthur they still need to save Abigail first. Arthur will sound a lot more angry and less composed in the low Honor route.
- โThe shooting function will be disabled when Sadie kicks the door open, preventing from shooting inside the Fence.
- โAfter the cutscene in which Milton is killed, the player can re-enter the Van Horn Fence and loot Milton's body as well as pick up his hat. No unique items can be retrieved from the corpse, only random valuables, and if the player chooses to wear Milton's hat, it will automatically be swept from Arthur's head shortly before the next cutscene trigger-point in which Arthur will place on his personal hat for his final ride.
- โIf restarting this mission via the Progress part of the main menu, players will not have any of the core bonuses there but will have some weapons there that are only available during the epilogue. Players are advised to be careful during the rescue part in Van Horn Trading Post as the majority of enemies have high powered weapons.
- โHowever, as of the 1.15 update, the player will retain their stats, 3 of each kind of Tonics (excluding Cocaine Gum and Chewing Tobacco, which will have 10 of each), maximum ammunition for each weapon, and their current horse chosen before replaying this mission. This makes achieving a Gold Medal easier (perhaps more so than the first time around if the player has increased stats).
- โAfter this mission, all of Arthurโs items, weapons, and clothing will be transferred to John except for his money and horses. It is therefore advised that, if players have any unused treasure maps or valuables, they should refrain from using and selling them respectively until the epilogue.
- โIf the special encounter at the Aberdeen Pig Farm has not already been completed, it is possible to pass Arthur's money to John by allowing Arthur to be robbed before the mission "Our Best Selves", then retrieving the money as John in the Epilogue.
- โAny horses Arthur owns that are in the stables will disappear and be lost after this mission.
- โIf played normally through the story and leaving at any point of the mission, players will need to restart from "Our Best Selves" as it will automatically continue into "Red Dead Redemption", unless the game is autosaved.
- โIf Arthur goes for the money, he can choose to climb back down the ladder rather than enter through the cave entrance. He'll still have to leave through the entrance with the money, however, where he will be attacked by Micah.
- โOddly, in the High Honor "Go back for the money" ending, Micah enters the cave after picking up the money sack rather than leaving the campsite. It is possible that he was resting or searching for weaponry or supplies in the cave before leaving.
- โDuring Arthur's final ride, it is possible to have him reflect on bad dialogue with the high honor "That's The Way It Is" playing as well as the yellow cinematic color screen, and vice versa. To do this, start the mission with high or low honor, play it as normal up until the end of the cutscene before Arthur's final ride begins, then just before you can reflect on any dialogue, go to your settings and go to the cheats, and input and enable the "Increase Honor" or "Decrease Honor" cheats depending on the honor level you had when you started the final ride.
- โArthur tells John that he can't go any further and gives John his hat and satchel, expressing that it would mean a lot to him if John got away safely. John is reluctant to leave Arthur's side, but eventually does so after persuasion from him, calling him his "brother". This scene is almost the inspiration from the 2006 film Blood Diamond where Archer ends up giving Solomon the diamond and a chance to run, and dies peacefully watching the sun on a mountain cliff.
- โThe cutscene of Arthur passing his hat over to John in the "Help John" ending was the very last motion-capture scene ever made on set.
