Tao Cheng is Wei Cheng's firstborn son and a representative of the Los Santos Triads. Voiced by Richard Hsu, he speaks mainly Mandarin and relies on his translator in English-speaking business meetings. Tao is often intoxicated and leaves the translator to conduct the serious parts of negotiations, presenting a far less disciplined face of the Cheng family than his father.

Ron Jakowski arranges a meeting between Tao, his translator and Trevor Philips at Trevor Philips Industries, where Tao is high and treats Trevor's meth operation casually. When the Aztecas attack the laboratory, Trevor puts Tao and the translator in a freezer while he fights them off. Afterward, the translator takes Tao away, saying they have seen enough. Tao later chooses the O'Neil Brothers as the Chengs' meth suppliers. At their next meeting, Tao insults Trevor, who slams his head against a wooden post before setting out for the O'Neil ranch and destroying it.

During The Third Way, Franklin Clinton targets Wei Cheng as part of the plan to remove Michael De Santa, Trevor and Franklin's enemies. Lester Crest traces Tao's credit card to the Pacific Bluffs Country Club, where Tao rides with his father in a convoy. Franklin attacks the vehicles and kills Wei. Tao survives the ambush and leaves the country club alive.

◆Despite obtaining his personal phone number, Tao cannot be contacted by Trevor.
◆According to the Rush Casting Call, Tao's beta name was Tae Wong and he was addicted to ecstasy.
◆During the mission Trevor Philips Industries, when Trevor enters his Bodhi at the beginning of the mission, the radio will always be tuned to Soulwax FM and Tao will be dancing to whichever song is playing, suggesting that this could be his favorite radio station. He will also dance along if the radio is tuned to LS-UR (enhanced version only), FlyLo FM or Non-Stop-Pop FM.
◆In the official traditional and simplified Chinese version, his name is 陳陶(陈陶) in Chinese. But his surname "陳(陈)" is possibly a translation error of the Chinese version, because "陳(陈)" pronounces "Chen" instead of "Cheng" in Mandarin Chinese, and “程" is more likely the correct surname, which is a Chinese surname and pronounced "Cheng", then his correct full name would be “程陶 (程陶) [Chéng Táo]”.
