The Crane is a very large bird found around swamps in Red Dead Redemption 2. It represents two species, the Sandhill Crane, Antigone canadensis, and the Whooping Crane, Grus americana. Both occur around the waterways of Bayou Nwa, where the wet ground and marsh vegetation suit the birds. They are most often encountered in the swampy parts of the region.
Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes are omnivores. Their food includes nuts, berries, seeds and insects, along with small birds and reptiles. The birds are wary of disturbance and take flight when startled, so they do not remain on the ground once nearby activity alarms them. Their size makes them conspicuous among the birds found in the marshes.
A Varmint Rifle is used to bring down cranes. A killed bird provides Crane Feathers, Flight Feathers, Gamey Bird Meat and a Crane Carcass. The feathers go into crafting, while the carcass can be sold to traders. Crane hunting therefore supplies both crafting material and meat from the wetlands of Bayou Nwa.
