Opossum

The Opossum is Red Dead Redemption 2's Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana. It is a moderately sized marsupial with a dull grayish-brown coat, a white face, hairless ears and a long flat nose. Its long, hairless prehensile tail can grasp branches and carry small objects, while its rear feet have clawless opposable thumbs. It is the game's only marsupial.

Opossums occur mainly across the south-central regions, including Big Valley, Black Bone Forest, Lone Mule Stead, Grizzlies East, the southern area of Wapiti Indian Reservation, Scarlett Meadows, Siltwater Strand and Ringneck Creek. They also appear around Riggs Station in West Elizabeth. They are most active around dawn and dusk. When badly frightened, an opossum may fall onto its side and feign death rather than run.

An opossum yields an Opossum Pelt, Stringy Meat and an Opossum Carcass. Its meat is edible and its skin is used in crafting. The trapper uses four perfect Opossum Pelts for the Pronghorn Flop Hat. Killing one while it is playing dead counts toward Master Hunter Challenge Rank 9, while killing one feeding on a corpse contributes to Survivalist Challenge Rank 6.
