Player notes
The Vulture is a large scavenging bird in Red Dead Redemption 2, based on the Eastern turkey vulture, Cathartes aura septentrionalis, and the Western turkey vulture, Cathartes aura meridionalis. It is usually seen overhead as it searches for decomposing remains. Vultures gather around human bodies and animal carcasses to feed, making them a common sight wherever something has died.
The Eastern turkey vulture occurs across Lemoyne, Ambarino and New Hanover. Eastern birds can also be found among the large birds on the cliffs above Twin Stack Pass in central New Hanover. The Western turkey vulture lives in West Elizabeth and New Austin. Vultures appear sporadically across much of the central regions, but New Austin has the largest population.
Armadillo and the surrounding Cholla Springs country are especially populated by vultures. A killed bird can provide a Vulture Feather, Flight Feather, Gamey Bird Meat and a Vulture Carcass. Killing vultures while they feed on a corpse counts toward Rank 6 of the Survivalist Challenge.

- ◆The two types of Vulture in RDR2 reference two subspecies of turkey vulture in real life, the eastern turkey vulture (Cathartes aura septentrionalis) and the western turkey vulture (C. a. meridionalis).
- ◆An apparent oversight is the Compendium portrait of the Eastern Turkey Vulture depicting another species, the black vulture (Coragyps atratus), which is not found in-game. This second vulture species found in the United States features a broader, grey-skinned head with a narrower beak.
