About this weapon

The Molotov Cocktail is a Thrown weapon in Grand Theft Auto V. It is a homemade incendiary made from a partially filled glass bottle and a rag. The rag is lit before the bottle is thrown, and the bottle breaks on impact, releasing the fumes that catch fire. GTA V depicts it as a brown bottle carrying a Logger Beer label with a short rag. It can be bought for $2,000.

A thrown bottle ignites a small area where it lands. Its damage is directed less at a single immediate blast than at the fire left behind, with modest fire rate and accuracy among thrown weapons and a short range. The flames cover a two-metre area for 20 seconds and can ignite targets within four metres. Fire spreads to anyone caught nearby, making the weapon suited to clustered enemies on foot and to forcing targets out of a small space.

Against unarmoured NPCs on foot, one direct Molotov will usually burn a target to death. Burning NPCs fall down for ten seconds and cannot attack or rise while they burn. Vehicles can also catch fire when their parts are ignited. Players burn for a much shorter time, while Story Mode protagonists may fall over when set alight. LSFD firefighters carrying fire extinguishers are immune to fire damage.

Trivia

  • ◆The name Molotov Cocktail was coined by Finnish soldiers, who created the weapon for the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. The weapon was named after Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov who claimed the Soviets were dropping bread baskets - instead of bombs - upon Finland. The Finns retaliated by claiming they were serving a drink to go with the food - and named their petrol bombs Molotov Cocktails.
  • ◆In GTA IV, Molotov Cocktails are made from bottles of Cherenkov Vodka. In GTA V and GTA Online, they are made with Logger Beer bottles.
  • ◆In Grand Theft Auto IV and its episodes, the "reloading" animation will differ depending on the player' stance after throwing a previous bottle. While standing, the character will take a bottle and ignite the rag with a lighter, whereas while crouching, they simply take the bottle with the rag already ignited, omiting said animation.
  • ◆In Grand Theft Auto IV and its episodes, it's possible to set an enemy wielding a lit Molotov: if he's shot when ready to throw the bottle, he'll drop it and catch fire himself.
  • ◆In GTA Chinatown Wars, Molotov Cocktails limit up to 99 units.
