Player notes

The Panther is a large feline in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, based on Puma concolor couguar. It is one of two panther species in the game, alongside the Florida Panther. Both species share the same habitat and may appear at the same locations. The Panther behaves like the Cougar, making it one of the game's dangerous close-range predators.

Panthers occur around Old Harry Fen and Lagras in Lemoyne, while Stillwater Creek is a Red Dead Online location for them. They can emerge suddenly in wooded or overgrown ground, sometimes going for a horse before attacking its rider. A Panther may rush its target outright or remain concealed in bushes until it can ambush. Its speed and agility leave little time to react once it commits to an attack.

Hunting a Panther yields Panther Fur, Big Game Meat and a Panther Carcass. Its pelt quality is preserved by a clean kill, while damaging shots reduce the quality of the fur. Panthers are difficult to spot among forest cover, so they function as both a hazardous wild encounter and a source of animal materials.

  • โ—†If the player encounters a panther before studying it, in interaction options it will show up as a "big cat".
  • โ—†While the Florida Panther is a population of Cougars that inhabit the Southeastern United States in real life, the species of the in-game Panther and Florida Panther (which are identical) seem dubious at first glance.
  • โ—†Both act like and are the same size as a Cougar, but have rosettes reminiscent of a jaguar or leopard.
  • โ—†Both also roar (as opposed to growling like a Cougar), while Cougars cannot roar in real life.
  • โ—†While the Florida Panther's Compendium photo is accurate to its model, the Compendium photo for the regular Panther portrays a melanistic jaguar, further adding to the confusion.
  • โ—†To add to the confusion even further, the Legendary variant of the Panther is called Giaguaro, which translates to "jaguar" in Italian.
  • โ—†The Kit Satchel upgrade requires a perfect panther pelt.
  • โ—†The Panther Trail saddle (crafted from a single panther pelt at a Trapper) is arguably the best saddle in the game when it comes to speed/stamina, as it gives the following bonuses:
