About this weapon

Fist is the Melee weapon that represents an unarmed protagonist or playable character in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. It is available whenever no other weapon is being used, keeping the character outwardly unarmed in weapon-free areas. Its low damage and very short reach make it a last-resort option beside firearms and dedicated melee weapons, though attacks can be delivered in quick succession.

Combat with Fist includes punches, kicks, headbutts and slaps. An opponent caught unaware can be knocked out with a sucker punch, while a stealth attack uses a chop to the neck to render them unconscious. Unarmed fighting also raises the character's strength, improving melee attacks. Blows against vehicles cause damage, with aircraft particularly susceptible to repeated impacts.

Fist also has a non-combat use in basic vehicles. With it selected while driving, the character can make an obscene gesture and insult pedestrians or other drivers. Brief abuse may be met calmly, but sustained insults can make pedestrians flee or try to pull the character from the vehicle, while drivers may speed away recklessly or pursue them.

Trivia

◆Destroying cars with fists does not attract a wanted level, no matter how many cars the player destroys, even if a cop is killed by a car explosion that is caused by damaging the car with the fists.
◆However, the opposite may happen in Grand Theft Auto IV, as smashing a smoking vehicle can cause the said vehicle to catch fire and eventually explode and attract a wanted level.
◆Of all the Grand Theft Auto protagonists, Trevor Philips, Niko Bellic, Victor Vance, Huang Lee and Luis Fernando Lopez are the ones who have a solid hand-to-hand combat background; Niko, Trevor, and Vic as part of their army training, Huang by his martial arts background, and Luis by his underground cage fighting experience. Carl Johnson can acquire skills through the progress of the game by training in gyms.
◆In The Ballad of Gay Tony and GTA V, there is a cheat that allows the player to have an explosive punch. These explosions are as powerful as the Explosive Shotgun, able to kill someone and destroy vehicles in one to two hits; when playing as Trevor Philips, he can destroy vehicles in one hit at the cost of getting killed unless the invincibility cheat is activated, wherein he will be able to survive explosions.
