Player notes
The Donkey is the Standard donkey, based on Equus africanus asinus. It is a mountable and hitchable animal in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. Smaller and slower than horses, it performs below them for speed and size. It cannot be fitted with a saddle or kept in a stable, leaving it as a temporary mount rather than a horse the player can maintain.
In Lemoyne, donkeys appear in Rhodes and at Hill Haven Ranch. Red Dead Online also places them at Carmody Dell and Flatneck Station in New Hanover. A donkey can turn up at Watson's Cabin during a random encounter in northern Big Valley, West Elizabeth. In Guarma, two occupy separate outcroppings at Aguasdulces, and a man in a poncho rides one near Manicato. Donkeys also appear in New Austin.
The animal can be hitched and ridden, and it can be sold to a Horse Fence. During "A Kind and Benevolent Despot", a donkey drags Javier Escuella. In Red Dead Online random encounters, the Danger Seeker and the Fame Seeker ride donkeys. Near Annesburg, a man may rarely be seen riding one as well. Donkeys provide no loot.
Trivia
- โDonkeys cannot be stabled.
- โHowever, it is possible to save one as a temporary unbonded mount.
- โDonkeys sell for zero cents at the horse fence. Upon selling a Donkey, Clay Davies will remark that Clive Davies likes Donkeys because he can bond with them.
- โThe Donkey's health core always displays as a red heart, which normally represents a depleted health core.
- โThe Donkey can be spawned using cheat code "You want something new". It will have a half-full health core as opposed to the normal very low.
- โIn the preview photo for "A Kind and Benevolent Despot", the Donkey that is seen is far bigger than the one used in the final game, possibly implying they were originally meant to be closer to the size of the Mules in Red Dead Redemption.
- โIncidentally, the donkey is erroneously referred to as a mule in this mission.
- โIn the 1.00 version of the game, donkeys had modeled fur. This was later removed in an update for the game.
- โUnlike other domesticated animals, donkeys do not have any breeds, and are all called 'Standard Donkey'. There are many recognized donkey breeds in Africa, Europe and Asia, but in the Americas most donkey are mixed breeds.
