Honor, Amongst Thieves

Arthur meets Captain Lyndon Monroe at the Wapiti Indian Reservation after agreeing to help him. Monroe explains that he was meant to supervise the distribution of smallpox vaccine, but Colonel Henry Favours has diverted the shipment to punish the Wapiti Indians after the unrest. Illness is spreading through the reservation, affecting adults and children. Arthur is appalled by what he sees and decides they must take the medicine back from the U.S. Army. Monroe urges caution, yet agrees to accompany him.

They ride into Cumberland Forest, where Monroe says the vaccine is being sent toward Valentine. He believes Favours wants to provoke the Wapiti into resisting, giving the Army a reason to act against them. Monroe also describes Favours as a failed Civil War officer seeking a final military success before retirement, backed by a regiment that treats the Indians with contempt. From a high ledge, Arthur and Monroe spot the Army wagon carrying the medical supplies.

Arthur tells Monroe to stay out of sight, then rides after the wagon alone. He catches up with the Army transport and takes the vaccine from it before returning to the Wapiti Indian Reservation. Arthur hands the recovered supplies to Monroe. Monroe thanks him and prepares to put the medicine to use among the sick at the reservation.
