Simple Pleasures

John Marston, living as "Jim Milton", meets Tom Dickens and Pronghorn Ranch owner David Geddes at the ranch. He accidentally gives Geddes his real surname before correcting himself, and Dickens notices the slip. Geddes nevertheless praises John's part in defending the ranch from the Laramie Gang and tells him to work hard if he intends to support his family. Dickens assigns Abe to find John some work.

Outside, Abe points out the wagon bringing Abigail and Jack from Strawberry. John asks him to keep quiet about the trouble with the Laramie Gang, then greets his family at their cabin. Abigail is angry that John has again put himself in danger. He argues that the confrontation led to this job, then leaves with Abe for the cattle shed. As they walk across Big Valley, Abe asks about John's past and whether he is a gunslinger. John insists he is only a ranch hand.

At the shed, Abe has John milk a cow. Jack arrives, and John introduces him as "Lancelot" before the three go to the stables. John takes a pitchfork and clears the manure into a wheelbarrow while Jack helps. He sends Jack to finish the work and returns the pitchfork. Back at the cabin, Abigail says she is tired of running and wants their family to settle down. The following morning, John rises from bed beside her at Pronghorn Ranch.
