The Assault SMG is a fully automatic Personal Defense Weapon in the Machine Guns class, made by Vom Feuer. Its model is based on the Magpul PDR, without that weapon's forward ergonomic grip, and it has an integrated carry handle above a short top rail. It uses Cal 5.7×28mm or STI ACB 6×30mm ammunition and carries 40 rounds per clip. A suppressor is not fitted as standard, though it can be added through the attachment system.
In Grand Theft Auto V, the Assault SMG is available from Ammu-Nation for $6,725 as a Rockstar Games Social Club bonus weapon. In Grand Theft Auto Online, it becomes available from Ammu-Nation at Rank 29. Assault SMGs can also be taken from certain enemy NPCs during the Business Supplies Steal Mission, "Colombian Flake", and one is placed on a desk at B1 level in a player's Nightclub.
Its damage rating is 22, with a fire rate of 55, accuracy of 40 and range of 35. It has range and accuracy comparable to the Micro SMG and SMG, while dealing slightly more damage but firing more slowly. Damage does not diminish over distance, making it useful against helicopter tail rotors near maximum range. Most assault rifles and machine guns outgun it at close and medium distances, and it cannot be used for drive-bys.
Trivia
- ◆In real life, the FN P90 uses the FN 5.7×28mm cartridge, while the Magpul PDR uses the 5.56×45mm NATO one. However, in both games, the Assault SMG shares its ammunition with other SMGs for the sake of gameplay convenience.
- ◆Also, the Assault SMG in The Ballad of Gay Tony has etchings on the sighting component that reads "P90 Cal 5.7×28", while the one in GTA V has marking on the front section that reads "STI ACB 6×30mm", which is a fictional cartridge.
- ◆The HUD icon in the Xbox 360/PS3 versions of the game shows the Assault SMG with a magazine. Oddly, the HUD icon in the enhanced version has the magazine missing.
- ◆There is a beta render of the Assault SMG that exists in the game files. This model was apparently based on the FN P90 like The Ballad of Gay Tony iteration, but was altered with a bullpup configuration similar to that of the FN F2000, with the overhead area replaced by a shell ejector. The top of the receiver was a bit smaller, as the P90-style cartridge was absent. Its textures were also unfinished, possibly scrapped early during development in favour of the current model.
